The Safest Cars In America

Car buyers often value safety above all the other features of their new cars, SUVs, or light trucks. It's true that manufacturers often stress other features such as gas mileage or bells and whistles like the latest moonroof or comfortable seat. Still, virtually none neglect descriptions of safety features, which include airbags, crumple zones, and anti-lock brakes. The problem is that this mix and assortment of features leaves buyers with the difficult task of determining which autos are extremely safe and which only claim to be. 24/7 Wall St. sifted through the claims and the data from auto safety measurements used across the industry to find the safest cars sold in America.

Private organizations such as Edmunds, Consumer Reports, and J.D. Power have their own safety benchmarks. While these are often based on government tests and figures, each firm uses its own unique methodology to create its lists of safest cars. The two organizations that issue the most widely and closely followed research are The Insurance Institute for Highway the Safety (IIHS) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The IIHS describes itself as "an independent, nonprofit scientific and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses - deaths, injuries and property damage - from crashes on the nation's roads." The organization measures front crash, side impact, and rear crash effects, as well as roof strength. The weakness of the IIHS system is that its highest rating, Top Safety Picks, number about 100 cars. 24/7 views this set of measurements as incomplete because such large number of vehicles pass the test.

Tests done by the NHTSA, a division of the Department of Transportation, are extremely thorough. The agency posts the results of the tests at Safercar.gov, and its Five-Star Safety Ratings database goes back to 1990. Starting with 2011 models, the NHTSA has upgraded its rating system by introducing "tougher tests and rigorous new 5-Star Safety Ratings that provide more information about vehicle safety and crash avoidance technologies," the agency notes.

The Five-Star Safety Ratings evaluation covers dozens and dozens of models. However, Catherine Howden of the Department of Transportation told 24/7 Wall St. that "NHTSA rated 81 percent of the light vehicle fleet for the 2012 model year, and estimates 85 percent of the light vehicle fleet for the 2013 model year will be rated." The ratings are based on measurements of overall safety, frontal crash, side crash, and rollover. Each car can receive up to five stars in each of the four categories, but only four model cars received five stars across all four categories. These are "The Safest Cars In America."

When reviewing the four cars, 24/7 Wall St. looked at major safety features, even if they were not a part of the government evaluation.

1. Chevrolet Camaro.

The Camaro is among America's iconic muscle cars. It was built and marketed by Chevy from 1966 to 2002. Over the course of that period, it competed with such cars as the Ford Mustang and Pontiac Firebird. As a matter of fact, the Mustang and Camaro fight for the attention of buyers today after the model was re-launched in 2009.

The Camaro comes in several models, depending in large part on engine size. The base Camaro has a sticker price of $23,345. The highest-end Camaro, the ZL1, has an engine comparable to the one used in Chevy's sports car flagship - the Corvette. Its eight-cylinder engine has a horsepower output of 580. The price of this model can be as high as $54,350.

All Camaro models come with StabiliTrak, a stability control system made by GM, and with limited slip differential that helps the car maneuver in difficult driving situations. The Camaro also has daytime running lights and a tire pressure monitoring system. Although the government tests do not consider this, the fact that the Camaro is built close to the ground and therefore has a low center of gravity makes it less likely to roll over than many cars and light trucks.

2. Honda Accord.

The Accord is usually among the top ten selling cars in the U.S. In September, Honda sold 29,182 Accords. For the first nine months of the year, total sales were 247,847, up 37% from the same period in 2011. The Accord is a relatively low priced, mid-sized car that happens to have a large number of standard safety features.

The Accord has three basic models. The first is a four door version with a four-cylinder engine. The next has four doors and a six-cylinder engine. The last is a sedan version. The base Accord has a sticker price of $21,680. The Accord competes primarily with the Toyota Camry, the Ford Fusion, and Nissan Altima.

Among the safety features of the Accord are Honda's Advanced Compatibility Engineering, which is built to distribute the energy of a frontal crash more evenly throughout the car's frame. Anti-lock brakes are standard on most cars, but Honda also has a system to distribute brake force among the four wheels as needed when the car stops sharply. Front airbags deploy based on the crash force and tension on seat belts. The Accord is also available, in some models, with a radar system that senses the distance between the front of the car and a vehicle ahead of it its, and another feature that detects whether the car has drifted out of its lane.

3. Kia Optima.

Each of the two major versions of the Optima makes our list - the four-door front-wheel-drive version and its hybrid counterpart. The Optima also made the Five-Star Safety Ratings list with its 2011 and 2012 models.

Kia is part of the family of brands made by Korea's huge car maker Hyundai which also markets in the U.S. under the Hyundai brand. Each of the car lines has done particularly well in America and has been able to gain market share due to its reputation for being a low-priced, high-quality car. Hyundai and Kia vehicles combined sold over 974,000 cars and light truck in the U.S. through the first nine months of the year. That is more vehicles than Nissan sold over the same period. The Optima has a base price of $21,200. The base price for the hybrid version is $25,700.

4. Volvo S60.

One of the stablemates of the S60 - the Volvo V40 - was recently named "the safest car in the world," scoring five stars in the Euro NCAP crash tests. The "premium hatchback recorded the highest score of any car to undergo the tests," The Telegraph of the U.K. recently reported.

Volvo, for years the major car maker in Sweden, is now owned by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group. Ford was the company's owner from 1999 to 2010. Volvo has struggled to compete in the U.S. with larger carmakers at the high-end of the luxury import market - BMW, Mercedes, and Audi. It also competes with the high-end models of Ford and GM. Through September, Volvo sold on average of nearly 6,000 cars a month in the U.S. Geely hopes that, over time, Volvo can build a brand presence in China, which would lift the brand's sales.

The V60 four-door comes in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions. The S60 is Volvo's mid-tier sedan with a base price of $31,750. This model has a five-cylinder 250 horsepower engine. The V60 is heavy and weighs over 3,500 pounds. Weight tends to be an advantage in a collision. The S60 has advance stability control to aid handling in difficult driving situations. The car also has an optional pedestrian detection system, which helps maneuver in city driving situations.

Kia Grabs Brass Ring At Madison Square Garden

Kia Motors America is extending and expanding its deal with Madison Square Garden, wherein Kia becomes a signature partner and official vehicle of the venue. The new partnership should give Kia some of what it has needed for years: awareness, affinity and positive brand perception.

The deal gives Kia a big placement at the Theater at Madison Square Garden, tie-ins with the New York Knicks, the New York Rangers and the New York Liberty, and presence around college basketball and tennis, as well as the Concert Series at The Garden. The partnership also includes an expanded presence for Kia on MSG regional sports networks, MSG and MSG+, and integration on the Garden, Knicks, Rangers and Liberty websites. Also, Kia vehicles will be on show year-round with a custom-built display space in the lobby entrance to the Arena.

Kia's Official Vehicle designation will include branding at the Arena for all associated sports events and the Concert Series. Kia gets digital and static signage throughout the Arena; features on GardenVision, the center-hung scoreboard; and on-court and on-ice branding and promotional contests. Kia will be there for the Concert Series that includes Madonna, Justin Bieber, One Direction, The Who and Neil Young and Crazy Horse. Kia will have a presence at all Friday night Knicks and Rangers games as the presenting partner.

Tim Chaney, executive director of marketing communications at Kia, points out that the automaker is not new to the Garden as it has had a seven-year relationship with the Knicks plus sponsorship of the the Rangers NHL team, activated with the New York Kia dealer group. "But this is the whole building all year long for multiple years." Beyond this, Kia is official vehicle of the NBA, and also has separate, individual sponsorship deals with 14 NBA teams. "But this really is the first of this scale for us; being a signature partner gives us exclusivity to select categories," says. He tells Marketing Daily that New York, media central, is the place to have this kind of deal. "And if you are going to have a presence in New York, this is the property to do. He adds that the Garden's multi-year, billion-dollar investment in facility renovation also works as a complement to Kia's own packed vehicle-launch schedule. "We looked at it simply: transformed Kia at the transformed Garden."

There's also a CRM element with Kia customers getting access and experiences with MSG's sports brands and events. The automaker says it will collaborate with the Knicks and Rangers on a number of promotions and events also for Kia customers. Some of the offers include tickets and special experiences at games. As the official vehicle of the Concert Series at The Garden, Kia will also work with MSG on promotions for select concerts.

Dave Kissel, president and CEO of Chicago-based sports-event media network InStadium, says the virtue of a major sponsorship deal like Kia's is that, among other things, it locks out the competition against an audience a marketer determines to be spot-on for its brand. "But even for the most well-funded brands you can't lock up every thing. So even the big guys have to be careful about how and where and when they spend money on sponsorships. But, clearly, sponsorship does work as part of the overall media mix. It's a $23 billion market; clearly, it works."

Indeed, Kia is not the lone auto brand with category-exclusivity in the Big Apple: across the East River, Honda in August became the 10th brand to hitch its star to the new Barclay's Center as a top-tier sponsor, becoming official vehicle of both the Brooklyn Nets and the arena itself. Among other things, Honda will sponsor the Brooklyn Hoops Winter Festival in December.

2012 Kia Rio SX Sedan Review & Test Drive

The all-new 2012 Kia Rio SX is priced right for bargain conscious consumers looking for a larger than compact sedan that is roomy, equipment and options offered by more expensive vehicles in its class.

The all-new Rio is available in three trim levels-LX, EX and SX which is the model that I tested. The new Rio comes with a 1.6 liter GDI (Gas Direct Injected) four-cylinder with the option of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with an Active Eco System to extend mpgs.

One of only two vehicles in the segment to offer a GDI engine, the 2012 Rio offers consumers an elusive combination of power and impressive fuel economy, achieving class-leading 138 hp at 6,300 rpm/123 lb.ft. of torque at 4,850 rpm, while also maintaining a class-leading fuel economy rating of 30mpg/city and 40mpg/highway. Adding further to Rios improved performance, engineers worked to reduce engine weight by 29 lbs. over the previous generation by adding an aluminum valve cover and block to the third-generation Gamma engine, while incorporating cast iron liners for increased durability. This all-aluminum four-cylinder engine also features DOHCs and dual continuously variable valve timing to lower the torque band for excellent performance.

Conceived in Kias design studios in Irvine, California, the all-new Rio sedan exhibits highly sculpted sloping shoulder lines and a wedge-shaped exterior, projecting an athletic profile that conveys power and agility while mimicking the aggressive lines found on other recently launched Kia vehicles such as the 2011 Optima and Sportage. The new Rio Sedan sports its own interpretation of Kias signature grille, slimmed down to connect to the dynamic headlamp design, providing a new twist on the Kia family look that includes a bigger air intake to exude a youthful persona. The new Rio is both sleek and muscular. Standard features exterior cues on the Rio SX include body-color door handles and heated outside mirrors that are attached to the door rather than the plastic triangle like so many others in the segment; 17X7 in. alloy wheels with black painted pockets wrapped with 205/45R17 in. performance tires, LED daytime running lamps, rear combination lamps, and dual chrome exhaust tips.

The all-new Rio brings with it an all-new platform-longer, wider and lower than before. Its aggressive stance is assisted through an overall length of 171.9 in. with a platform measuring 67.7 in. wide and 57.3 in. high. Employing high-tensile-strength steel (63%), Rios lightweight design offers high-torsional stiffness for improved handling, ride quality and refinement. Though a more expensive alternative, using these materials also increases crash safety capabilities while reducing overall weight. To ensure good noise, vibration and harshness reduction, the new Rio was outfitted with hood and dash insulators as well as expandable foam in the A and C pillars and Thinsulate in the A and B pillars.

Built on a unibody frame, the front-wheel-drive Rio utilizes an independent front and rear suspension systems. Up front are MacPherson struts, gas-charged shocks, coil springs and stabilizer bar. In the rear is a torsion beam axle setup with gas-charged shocks. This suspension geometry engages drivers with responsive handling and provides the utmost comfort for a variety of driving situations. The electric-assisted power rack & pinion steering is also very responsive and easily guides the Rio where you want it to go with excellent feel for the road. The standard vehicle stability management system uses traction control and electronic stability control systems keep torque steer and understeer to a minimum during spirited driving times.

The new Rio SX comes standard with four-wheel power-assisted steel disc brakes. Up front are 11 in. vented discs clamped with dual-piston calipers and 10.3 in. solid discs clamped with single-piston calipers in the rear. Standard ABS helps to keep you in control of your direction during severe braking maneuvers and when braking on wet or slick pavement. The new Rio SX also comes standard with Hill Assist Control.

Moving inside, the 2012 Rio envelopes you and your passengers in a bold and modern cabin, centered on Kias characteristic horizontal three-cylinder instrument cluster with Supervision gauges in the SX model, two-tone for the 2012 Rio to emphasize a feeling of spaciousness and comfort. An extended wheelbase of 101.2 in. greatly enhances passenger and cargo capacity for additional comfort, offering 40 in. front headroom, 37.8 in. rear headroom, 43.3 in. front legroom and 31.1 in. rear legroom. Standard equipment inside the SX include a drivers seat height adjuster, power windows/door locks, Bluetooth wireless technology connectivity with steering-wheel mounted voice activation controls, leather-wrapped/tilt/telescoping steering wheel, shift knob, A/C, 60/40 split folding rear seats and leatherette door trim. Also metal pedals, cruise control, variable-speed wipers/washers, dual map lights, dual lighted vanity mirrors, sunglass holder, grab handles above each passenger door, trip computer, UVO powered by Microsoft in-car hands-free communication and entertainment system with rear camera display and chrome-coated accents throughout. Options in my SX trim test Rio included Navigation system, electric sunroof, remote keyless entry, heated outside mirrors, metal finish trim, AM-FM-CD stereo radio plus SIRIUS satellite with six-speakers, push-button start/stop, leather seat trim, heated front seats and carpeted floor mats.

Standard safety features include dual front advanced airbags, front seat-mounted side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, 3-point safety belts for all seating positions, LATCH system for child seats, child-proof rear door locks, front/rear crumple zones and steel beams in each door.

The all-new 2012 Kia Rio SX comes well equipped to satisfy the growing needs of young couples looking for an economical, versatile and fun-to-drive sedan. While it looks like a compact on the outside, the inside comfortably seats five people in style and safety. Priced from only $17,500.00, the SX trim level Rio is a great investment.

Kia and DC Comics Batman Optima debuts

Back at the beginning of the month, I mentioned that Kia and DC Comics had teamed up to create a Justice League series of customized Kia cars. Under the partnership, each of the core members of the Justice League would have their own customized Kias to reflect the superhero's personality. The heroes it would be getting the customize cars included Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, The Flash, Aquaman, and Cyborg.

The first of those customized Kia cars for the Justice League has turned up, and it's a Batman-themed Kia Optima SX Limited. The car is finished in matte black with piano black Batman logos and other touches. The car has a lowered suspension using a coilover system and sports a "muscular" ground effects kit.

The customized Kia was also fitted with Ksport performance brakes offering larger rotors and calipers along with improved stopping power and custom-designed 20-inch wheels. The car is also fitted with a performance exhaust system, and a custom front grill shaped like a batwing. The custom grill reportedly took over 40 hours to create.

The vehicle has yellow LED lighting accents all around and the HID headlights have an integrated bat signal. Inside the car, the seats are fitted with custom black leather and suede with yellow stitching. The car also features a Bat Suit and cowl in the trunk along with utility throwing stars in the center console. This vehicle will eventually be auctioned off with the proceeds going to a charity called We Can Be Heroes.

2014 Kia Soul Electric Vehicle Confirmed -- Model Line-up Expansion Continues As Automaker Enjoys Increasing Sales

Kia has announced that its next-generation Soul will offer the company's first all-electric powertrain.

Slated for 2014 launch, details on Kia's new EV are limited but disguised Soul development prototypes have already been spotted performing shakedown tests near Kia's technical HQ located in Russelsheim, Germany, as well as on the roads of UK. Sources believe the electric Soul will make its public debut either at the Chicago or New York international auto shows.

Beyond the Soul EV, Kia has pushed for fuel efficiency technology in other vehicles in its line-up as well. Two years ago, Kia first introduced its Optima hybrid vehicle, which features a 2.4 liter 4-cylinder engine mated with an electric motor producing 40-hp with a unique lithium-polymer battery.

What's more, Kia has also developed an all-new range of diesel powerplants designed to meet Europe's new Euro 6 pollution regulations. According to Kia engineer, the diesel engines will prove expensive to manufacture but still cost significantly less than its hybrid offerings, which is hindered by complex and expensive electrical components. Despite the challenges of creating a price-competitive hybrid, Kia has enjoyed climbing hybrid sales in Europe, rising nearly 80 percent from only 72,000 sold in 2008 to 129,000 units in 2012.

While the European auto market continues to struggle due to economic volatility and steeper austerity measures, Korean automaker Hyundai-Kia believes the company can stand to make serious global sales gains for 2012. Kia has gained an additional 23 percent of the European market in the first 7 months of 2012 despite the Euro market having fallen by 7.1 percent. All in all, according to Hyundai-Kia's figures, the company expects global sales exceeding 7 million for 2012, nearly 1 million more than the 6.1 million sold for 2011.

As Hyundai-Kia's sales performance continues to climb, expect the company to unveil more and more attractive and competitive vehicles to their model range in the months ahead. Look for more information on the latest Kia Soul EV as we draw closer to the 2013 New York Auto Show.

DIY car maintenance moves for fall: Replace the air filter

At a minimum, engine air filters ($11.50 to $53 per filter, depending on brand) should be replaced twice per year as part of car maintenance. So, if you haven't done so already, replacing your car's air filter is a good idea. When an air filter reaches the point where it causes enough of a pressure drop to restrict airflow, the car's fuel economy, performance and emissions begin to deteriorate, getting progressively worse until the dirty filter is replaced.

"Fortunately, it's easy to replace an engine air filter and, again, it's a job anyone can do without tools," says Travers.

Kia'S Design Revolution Under Peter Schreyer

The man that has contributed greatly to Kia's turnaround believes having the freedom to start the company's design revolution was the key ingredient its current success.

Speaking with the media at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, Kia's global head of design, Peter Schreyer, emphasised that car design is inherently a compromise but having the freedom and trust of the organisation has been instrumental in creating today's Kia models.

In Paris to showcase the striking three-door pro_cee'd and the next generation Kia Rondo, Schreyer admitted car designers of all kinds are influenced by each other's work.

"It is the case that everybody is influencing everybody else. So you can also find some things that we are doing on other cars now," Schreyer said.

Schreyer, who was largely responsible for the design of the original Audi TT and the Volkswagen New Beetle, is only the third automotive designer to receive an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in London (the other two being Sergio Pininfarina and Giorgetto Giugiaro).

Having started at Kia in 2008, his four years in charge have so far resulted in the Korean giant changing its entire design philosophy and producing cars that are instantly recognisable as part of the Kia family.

Asked if his well-publicised profile at Kia and the continuing expectation of designing great looking cars is creating pressure, Schreyer said he continues to focus on the excitement of design rather than the pressure.

"Of course there is a kind of [pressure]… you have a very high responsibility as a designer because the ups and downs of the company depends a lot on what we are doing.

"But if you have that in mind all the time while you're working, it slows you down and I think it's important to have this kind of excitement in yourself to try this and that."

Schreyer acknowledged that his design team are given a great deal of freedom at Kia.

"They gave me a lot of freedom, they stand behind it and they are proud of what is happening. From the beginning, this is something I really appreciate that they give me this kind of trust. That is great."

Schreyer is currently determined to see the Kia GT (above) and Track'ster (below) concept cars head to production and remains very optimistic that this will happen.

"The atmosphere is very positive at the moment, the cars have travelled all over the world, almost like a road tour. The response is very positive. I would be the happiest man if we get the two through. I don't give up."

Kia's global design team, which is based in Frankfurt, California and Seoul, numbers around 200-250 employees, who are tasked with creating the 51 new models currently in the pipeline. Schreyer believes the freedom given to his design team comes through the product.

"I think our cars have a soul somehow and they have an authenticity. You can feel that there is a team and that there is people behind it, that it's not just a code machine somehow."

Kia continues to grow both globally and locally. So far this year, Kia Australia's sales have grown by around 23 per cent.
