Weekly Driving Tip: Keep Your Focus!

Staring down long straight roadways for longer than 5 minutes at a time fatigues the visual cortex of your brain, causing you to speed and underestimate distances between cars, according to a study in Human Perception and Performance. Check all three mirrors and your gauges at the end of every song on the radio to keep your vision—and brain—sharp.

Cadenza test drive: Kia’s new hit

Nice handling, smooth ride and dependable power are just some of the words that come to mind to describe the new Cadenza 2014, just presented to the press on dreamy Del Mar, Ca.

Over two days at this affluent coastal Southern California community, executives of the Korean manufacturer showed their confidence that the newly arrived will continue to push up a brand that has come a long way from the days when people used to mix it up with Ikea.

According to Michael Sprague, executive VP for Marketing and Communications for the company, at classy boutique hotel L` Auberge del Mar: "this is the most technologically advanced Kia ever coming to the US market".

The car will go from $35.100 for a Premium version to $38.100 for the Luxury model and $41.1000 for a more sophisticated -and briefly tested- Technology, fully loaded.

It rivals Avalon, Maxima, Lacrosse and Taurus, TL and Lacrosse among others in this segment, but according to Kia, when it comes to price Cadenza sits on the lower part of a stair that just goes up from there.

A new key element for the new model is its connectivity at zero cost, possible because Cadenza uses your smartphone paired with UVO infotainment system to give you a cloud like myriad of choices such as road assistance, vehicle diagnostics and even parking finder for those of us who easily forget where is that we left our car at the mall, and makes things easy when it comes to telecommunicate just by downloading an app to your phone.

Henry Bzeih, Chief Technology Strategist, Connected Car & Infotainment (besides having one of the largest titles ever known) has a 100% confidence that this time Kia has an indisputable proposition.

"We discovered, talking to people, that they wanted all services in terms of connectivity but where not willing to pay, so we gave them for free", says. At least for 100.000 miles/10 years.

But all of this talk may come cheap if the car actually doesn't perform over the pavement.

So that is what we tried to find out taking it for a brief and curvy ride from Del Mar to Temecula wine country and back, to test it.

The new Cadenza has an upscale look without being ostentatious. This part of the plan about making a model that appeals to the new idea of smart is the new rich, was, in our view, a success.

When it comes to power, it´s 3.3 L engine gives you a confident push entering the highway or simply taking on a steep hill, which does without hesitation with it´s 293hp and, most important these days, without breaking the bank at the gas station. It´s average MPG is 22 (19 City 28 Hwy).

The ride is soft and the grip is firm, as the car manages to take on the turns with stability and precision, thanks to an effective Multi-link rear suspension.

The top of the line Technology model comes with a very useful blind spot detector and a little annoying lane departure warning system that were really helpful when trying, busily, to find our way after getting inexplicably lost.

Finally, the interior is very roomy and its navigational system has easy to understand graphics, although the control panel feels a little bit boring.

The overall result is a very positive note for the car and its performance, and a new hit for the brand.

Consumers' Favorites: Best Cars for College Graduates

2013 Kia Optima Image

Proving that one can still have fun after college, the two top spots were driving enthusiasts' favorites. The eminently agile Scion FR-S sports car took 1st place with 15.2 percent of the vote. The still sprightly but more practical Volkswagen GTI wasn't far behind with 12.2 percent. Third place went to the Kia Optima, with the handsome, value-packed sedan capturing 8.5 percent of your votes.

Road Trip Tip - Take the scenic route!

Life really is about the journey, so for Pete's sake, have some fun on your trip. If you're particularly confident in your navigator (or navigation system), consider taking the more picturesque side roads instead of broad, mind-numbing interstates that may be packed with big rigs and holiday travelers. Pad your trip with extra time so that you can stop at historical landmarks, soak in the beauty of natural landmarks or enjoy a picnic.

Your Auto's Name May Mean More Than You Realize

A perfect name can summarize a car or truck's personality perfectly: Mustang, Ram, Impala. But the wrong one can send a message the automaker never intended.

Sometimes, automakers seem unaware of an embarrassing name. Despite having a name which means "a seizure in which the victim loses consciousness," Honda has not changed the name of the Fit back to Jazz, which is what it's called in other countries.

Maybe this is why automakers avoid proper words when naming their vehicles; it avoids unintended consequences. You'll understand why when you see what your vehicle's name means.

Here's a sampling of current model names, their definitions and the automaker who uses them.

  • Accent: A way of pronouncing a language, associated with a country, area, or social class. (Hyundai)
  • Avalon: Celtic legend, the isle of the dead, where King Arthur and other heroes are taken after death. (Toyota)
  • Civic: Relating to a city or town. (Honda)
  • Enclave: A minority culture group living as an entity within a larger group. (Buick)
  • Eos: The Greek goddess of dawn. (Volkswagen)
  • Equinox: The time or date at which the sun crosses the celestial equator and when day and night are of equal length. (Chevrolet)
  • Equus: Latin word for horse. (Hyundai)
  • Escalade: The scaling of fortified walls using ladders, as a form of military attack. (Cadillac)
  • Fiesta: A religious festival, especially a saint's day. (Ford)
  • Fit: A seizure in which the victim loses consciousness. (Honda)
  • Focus: The center of interest or activity. (Ford)
  • Forester: A person or animal living in a forest. (Subaru)
  • Forte: The strongest part of the blade of a sword. (Kia)
  • Fusion: A fusing or melting together. (Ford)
  • Genesis: The way in which something comes to be. (Hyundai)
  • Golf: An outdoor game played on a large course with a small, hard ball and a set of clubs. (Volkswagen)
  • Insight: The ability to see and understand clearly the inner nature of things, especially by intuition. (Honda)
  • Juke: Outmaneuver by feint or other deceptive movement. (Nissan)
  • Rio: Spanish word for river. (Kia)
  • Rogue: A person or thing that is defective or unpredictable. (Nissan)
  • Sequoia: A redwood tree. (Toyota)
  • Sienna: An earth pigment containing iron and manganese oxides, yellow-brown in natural state and reddish brown when burnt. (Toyota)
  • Sierra: A range of hills or mountains having a saw-toothed appearance from the distance. (GMC)
  • Sonata: A composition for one or two instruments, usually consisting of several movements. (Hyundai)
  • Soul: An entity which is regarded as being the immortal or spiritual part of the person and, though having no physical or material reality, is credited with the functions of thinking and willing, and hence determine all behavior. (Kia)
  • Touareg: or Tuareg, a nomadic African tribe. (Volkswagen)
  • Tundra: A vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen. (Toyota)
  • Vantage: A place or position affording a good view. (Aston Martin)
  • Volt: A turning movement or gait of a horse, in which it moves sideways around a center (Chevrolet)
